[Excerpted] "A utility industry group did not compile a plan on the usage of 0.5 ton of plutonium set to be extracted at a reprocessing plant in Aomori Prefecture in fiscal 2012 that started on April 1, a move that goes against government policy, sources close to the matter said Saturday...

...Japan currently possesses around 30 tons of plutonium for its use as fuel for nuclear power generation, while just a few kilograms of plutonium are said to be enough for making up a nuclear weapon. At the end of 2009, Japan was the fifth-largest possessor of plutonium for nonmilitary use, according to statistics by the International Atomic Energy Agency...."
