Lead in Lipstick

That's right.

Apparently the FDA has no limits on the amount of lead found in cosmetics, although it does limit the lead content that can be found in the color ingredients used in cosmetics. This is an absurd loophole.

The organization responsible for trying to increase cosmetic safety is The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics. This organization tests annually a variety of cosmetic products for safety, including lipstick and sunscreen. It has played a critical role in pushing the FDA to test lipstick for lead:

The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics is publicizing the results of the FDA lipstick test. The results indicate that " L'Oreal USA makes five of the 10 most contaminated brands in the FDA study."

Lead accumulates in the body as it is stored in the bones with calcium.
When women are pregnant, their bodies' demand for calcium may result in lead being pulled (with the calcium) from their bones, potentially damaging fetal development.

Lead has been proven to adversely impact cognitive development in children.
